Career history

Ben taught law at the University of East London, University College London, Birkbeck College and New York University in London.

Research Interests

Legal and social theory (particularly critical, feminist and post-structuralist approaches to law), legal philosophy, criminal law and public law (particularly critical approaches to counter-terrorist law and capital punishment) and critical and historical approaches to contemporary human rights discourse.

Anna Gould

Anna Gould

2015 Menzies Scholarship in Engineering

Anna holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (1st Class Hons) from the University of New South Wales, where she was a Co-op Scholar, and is nearing completion of a Master of Process Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. She recently undertook a four-month research project at the University of Cambridge, and is currently undertaking her master thesis in industry at Novartis in Basel.

In 2013 she was the winner and a member of the winning team at the Novartis International Biotechnology Camp in Switzerland. Prior to commencing a career in engineering, Anna studied music, and is an accomplished pianist. 

Leanne Hall

Leanne holds the degree of B Physiotherapy with First Class Honours from the University of Queensland (2006).

Her PhD project entitled "The contribution of dopamine to the regulation of orofacial, limb and trunk control: system or function specific effects" is being carried out at the University of Queensland.

Dr Philip Hardcastle

Dr Philip Hardcastle 1982 Menzies Memorial Scholar in Medicine

I was born in Sydney (1949) and initially attended Scotch College and later Inverell High School in northern New South Wales. After six years of medicine at Sydney University I trained at RPAH and then Sydney Hospital before entering the Orthopaedic Training Program at Oswestry, UK. From there I had an AO Scholarship doing trauma surgery in Austria for three months.

I worked as a senior orthopaedic registrar in Perth before being awarded the Menzies Scholarship in Medicine to train in Spinal Surgery in the UK and the USA. My initial consultancy was senior lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery with a special interest in spinal disorders at the University of WA working with the Hollywood Orthopaedic Service. I was then appointed as a Consultant Surgeon on the Spinal Injuries Unit at the RPR Hospital where I worked until my retirement.

Dr Allison Harvey

Dr Allison Harvey1995 Menzies Scholar in the Allied Health Sciences

Allison Harvey holds a B Sc Psychol (Hons) from the University of New South Wales (1991) and a M Clin Psych from Macquarie University (1995). Her PhD entitled "Nature, Process and Treatment of Acute Stress Disorder after a Motor Vehicle Accident" was undertaken at the University of New South Wales. It was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford, where she later became a faculty member in the Department of Experimental Psychology. Allison moved to UC Berkeley in 2004.

Allison serves on national and international committees such as the Executive Committee of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science and the Research Committee and the Congressional Liaison Group for the Sleep Research Society. Dr Harvey has published over 130 research articles and book chapters and has authored two books. Her research has been acknowledged with various awards including recognition from the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (1998), the American Association for Behavior Therapy (2003), the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research (2005-2006) and NARSAD (2006-2008).

Dr Leanne Hassett

Dr Leanne Hassett2005 Menzies Scholar in the Allied Health Sciences

Leanne Hassett holds the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) and Master of Health Science (Neurological Physiotherapy) from the University of Sydney.

Leanne's PhD project "Fitness training after traumatic brain injury" was designed to determine the effectiveness of fitness training for people with TBI and validate a field test for cardiorespiratory fitness. Cardiorespiratory fitness is commonly reduced in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and restricts participation in work and leisure activities.

William completed the degree of BCL/MPhil at Oxford over 2 years.

Davis Heaton 2013 Menzies Memorial Scholar in Law

David holds an LLB with First Class Honours and the Supreme Court Prize, and a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne.

A Melbourne lawyer working as an associate with the Boston Consulting Group, David will undertake the two year Bachelor of Civil Law/Master of Philosophy at Oxford University to explore the issues raised by executive powers of government.
