The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law

2017

Nathan Van Wees has been awarded the 2017 Sir Robert Menzies Scholarship in Law for his outstanding academic record, including the Supreme Court Exhibition Prize for Best Honours Thesis (law), the University Medal from Monash University and his contribution to community.

Nathan graduated at the top of his class of 400 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in 2015. He has worked as a volunteer tutoring refugees in English and provided research assistance at Refugee Legal. In addition Nathan completed three internships – the first with Ghana’s Human Rights Advocacy Centre, and later with within the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Canberra and for the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Nathan was awarded the Menzies scholarship to complete a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University.

2016

Emily Rumble has been awarded the 2016 Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law for her progress into a career of financial services regulation, contribution to community and outstanding academic achievement. Throughout her degree, Emily received six Dean’s List honours, a university medal in History and graduated second in a class of 203 students at the University of NSW. In addition, Emily contributed to university life both in the written form (via contributions to student newspapers and law journals), and vocally through participation and facilitation of debating competitions, college law reviews and choir performances.

Emily will complete a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University commencing in 2016.

2015

Andrew Currie holds a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne, and numerous academic prizes.

Andrew will commence a DPhil at the University of Oxford in October 2015. The scholarship will support the first two years of study.

2014

Christopher Ash holds a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland, and numerous academic prizes. A lawyer with Minter Ellison in Brisbane, he was previously Associate to the Honourable Justice Applegarth in the Supreme Court of Queensland.

Christopher undertook a Bachelor of Civil Law in October 2014 for one year.

2013

David Heaton holds an LLB with First Class Honours and the Supreme Court Prize, and a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne.

A Melbourne lawyer at present working as an associate with the Boston Consulting Group, in October 2013 David  commenced the two year Bachelor of Civil Law/Master of Philosophy at Oxford University to explore the issues raised by executive powers of government.

2012

Ms Eleanor Mitchell holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2009) and a BA from the University of Adelaide. A lawyer from Adelaide and previously Associate to Justice Jayne Jagot of the Federal Court, Eleanor commenced the one year BCL at the University of Oxford in October 2012.

2011

Ms Jane Taylor holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2009) and BA with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2007) from the University of Sydney where she was placed 1:281 in her graduating class. In October 2011 Jane commenced the BCL/MPhil at the University of Oxford for two years.

2010

Mr Sebastian Hartford Davis holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2009) and BA (2009) from Macquarie University. Sebastian was placed 1:196 in his graduating class and undertook the BCL/MPhil at Oxford for two years commencing in October 2010.

2009

Mr Thomas Prince holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2008) and BSc with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2006) from the University of Sydney. Tom commenced the degree of LLM at University College, London in October 2009.

Ms Aparna Rao who holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal and BSc (2007) from the Australian National University. Aparna commenced the degrees of BCL and MPhil at Oxford University in October 2009.

2008

Mr Patrick Ky holds the degrees of LLB (H1) and the Supreme Court Prize and BSc from Monash University and was placed 1/368 in his graduating class. Patrick undertook the BCL for one year at Oxford.

Ms Stefanie Wilkins Holds the degrees of LLB (H1) and BEng(Civil) (H1) from the University of Adelaide and was placed 2/200 in her graduating class. Stefanie undertook the BCL for

2007

Ms Rowan McRae holds the degrees of BA and LLB (2004) with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne. Rowan was ranked 1/285 in her graduating class and awarded the Supreme Court Prize. She took up her one year scholarship at the London School of Economics where she studied for an LLM (Public International Law).

Ms Kate Peterson holds the degrees of BEc (Social Sciences) with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2004) and LLB with First Class Honours (2006) from the University of Sydney. Kate was ranked 3/316 in her graduating class. She took up her one year scholarship at the London School of Economics where she studied for an LLM (Labour Law).

Ms Kristin van Zwieten holds the degrees of BA with Distinction from the University of Western Sydney and LLB (2005) from the University of New South Wales. Kristin was ranked joint first in her graduating class of 328 and awarded the University Medal in Law. She took up her two year scholarship at Oxford University where she studied for the BCL/MPhil.

2006

Ms Aruna Sathanapally holds the degrees of BA (Pass) and LLB from the University of NSW (2005) and was placed 1/317 in her graduating class. During her academic career Aruna gained four prizes including the University Medal. Aruna took up her two year scholarship at Oxford University where she studied for the BCL/MPhil.

Mr Ben Spagnolo holds the degrees of BA (H1) and LLB (H1) from the University of Western Australia (2005) and was placed 1/174 in his graduating class. During his academic career Ben gained 24 prizes including the Frank Edward Parsons Prize and the HCF Keall Prize. Ben took up his two year scholarship at Oxford University where he studied for the BCL/MPhil.

Mr James Upcher holds the degrees of BA (H1) and LLB (H1) from the University of Tasmania (2003) and was placed 1/137 in his graduating class. During his academic career James gained five prizes including the University Medal prizes and has seven publications. James took up the degree of DPhil at Oxford for three years. The award applied to the final two years of study only.

2005

Mr Joel Fetter holds the degrees of BA and LLB with First Class Honours (2003) from the University of Melbourne. He was ranked 1/291 in his graduating class and awarded the Supreme Court Prize. Joel took up his one year scholarship at the London School of Economics where he studied for the LLM.

Mr Ben Golder holds the degrees of BA with First Class Honours and LLB (2004) from the University of New South Wales. He was ranked 1/284 and awarded the University Medal in Law. Ben will take up his two year scholarship at Birkbeck College, University of London where he studied for a PhD in October 2006.

Mr David Thomas holds the degrees of BA with First Class Honours (2000) and LLB with First Class Honours (2002) from the University of Sydney. He was ranked 1/276 and awarded the University Medal in History and the University Medal in Law. David took up his one year scholarship at Oxford University where he studied for the BCL.

2004

Mr William Heath holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and BA with First Class Honours (2002) from the University of Melbourne. William took up his two year scholarship at Oxford University studying for the BCL/MPhil.

Ms Premala Thiagarajan holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours (2002) and the Supreme Court Prize and BA (1999) from Monash University. Premala took up her one year scholarship at Oxford University studying for a BCL.

Ms Nicole Tyson holds the degrees of BA/LLB with First Class Honours in Law (2000) and the University Medal from the University of Tasmania. Nicole took up her one year scholarship at Oxford University studying for the Master of Studies in Legal Research.

2003

Mr Albert Dinelli holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours (2001) and BA (1998) from Monash University. Mr Dinelli was placed second in his graduating class of 338. Albert took up his one year scholarship at Oxford University where he studied for a BCL.

2002

Mr Oren Bigos holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours (1999) and BComm (1997) from Monash University. He was placed first in his graduating class of 360 and was awarded the Supreme Court Prize. Oren took up his two year scholarship at Oxford University where he studied for a BCL/MPhil.

Ms Sarah Martin holds the degrees of BA and LLB with First Class Honours (2000) from the University of Melbourne and was placed second in her graduating class of 297. Sarah took up her two year scholarship at Oxford University where she studied for a BCL/MPhil.

2001

Mr Patrick Flynn holds the degrees of BSc (1994) and LLB (1997) from the University of New South Wales. He was placed equal first in his graduating class of 224 and was awarded the University Medal in Law. Patrick took up his one-year scholarship at Cambridge University where he studied for a Master of Laws.

2000

Mr Chester Brown holds the degrees of BA (H1) and LLB (H1) from the University of Melbourne (1998) where he was placed 6/237 in his graduating class. He took up his two-year scholarship at Cambridge University studying for a PhD.

Mr Rohan Hardcastle holds the degrees of BA and LLB (H1) from the University of Western Australia (1997) where he was placed 2/157 in his graduating class. Rohan studied for the DPhil (Law) at Oxford University.

1999

Ms Kathleen Payne holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (1995) and Bachelor of Laws (with First Class Honours) from the University of Queensland (1997) and was placed 4/206 in her graduating class and was awarded the University Medal. Kathy studied for the MPhil Degree (Criminology) for one year at the University of Cambridge.

Ms Kirsti Samuels holds the degrees of Bachelor of Science (1995) and Bachelor of Laws (with First Class Honours) from the University of Sydney (1997) where she was placed 5/228 in her graduating class. Kirsti studied for two years at Oxford University reading for the Bachelor of Civil Law.

1998

Mr Matthew Tyson holds the degrees of BA/LLB from the University of New South Wales (1997) where he was placed 8th in a graduating class of 224. Matthew attended Oxford to study for the one year BCL.

Mr Justin Hogan-Doran holds the degrees of BEc (Social Sciences) (1994) and LLB (with First Class Honours) from the University of Sydney (1996) and was placed 4th in his graduating class. Justin took up his scholarship at Oxford University to study for the two year BCL.

1997

Ms Gail Hubble holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (Hons), Master of Arts, Bachelor of Laws (with First Class Honours) from Monash University and took up her scholarship at Oxford University to study for the BCL.

Mr Stephen Donaghue holds the double degree of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (with First Class Honours) and the Supreme Court Prize from the University of Melbourne. Stephen attended Oxford University to study for a DPhil.

1996

Ms Frances Williams holds the degree of Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and the University Medal from the University of Queensland. Frances attended Cambridge to read for the degree of Master of Laws.

Mr Andrew Kenyon holds the degree of Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne. Andrew went to University College, London to read for the degree of Master of Laws.

1995

Ms Renée Leon holds the double degree of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from the Australian National University. Renée read for the degree of Master of Laws at Cambridge.

1994

Ms Dominique Hogan-Doran holds the degrees of Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney. Dominique read for the Degree of Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford.

1993

Ms Dariel De Sousa holds the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours and Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from Monash University. Dariel read for the Degree of Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford.
