Menzies Foundation Board Chair, Brian Doyle AM congratulated Dr Stocker on the honour saying it was great recognition of Dr Stocker’s contribution to pharmaceutical and medical research and Australian science in general over many years.
“Dr Stocker’s experience in the commercialisation of research and development has benefitted many organisations and the Australian community over the course of his career and it is wonderful to see him recognised in this way by the University of Melbourne.
“The Menzies Foundation is delighted to have him on our Board and we can see the value he brings particularly as we look to expand and strengthen our scholarships in engineering and STEM fields.”
Dr Stocker became a Director of the Menzies Foundation earlier this year to strengthen the research credentials of the Board.
The former Chief Executive and Chairman of the CSIRO, Dr Stocker has served in a number of pre-eminent science roles including the Australian Government's Chief Scientist, Chairman of the Australian Science and Technology Council and as a member of the Australian Research Council.
Dr Stocker was a foundation member of the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council. He is currently Chair of the Science and Engineering Advisory Committee for EPA Victoria.
Dr Stocker was also a Board member of The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research from 2000 to 2006.
Dr Stocker completed a Bachelor of Medical Science, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and his PhD at the University of Melbourne. His early career involved working on monoclonal antibodies and leading an international task force into the scientific and commercial opportunities offered by biotechnology-based vaccines.
