For more than 30 years the Menzies Foundation has played a strong role in providing funds and support for health and medical research around the country, starting with the estalishment of the Menzies School of Health Reserarch in Darwin in 1984.
The Foundation has invested approximately $9.2 million in supporting health and medical research through the establishment of and untied funding to:
- the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin
- the Menzies Institute for Medical Research in Hobart
- the Menzies Health Institute Queensland on the Gold Coast, and
- the Menzies Centre for Health Policy in Sydney and Canberra.
Menzies School of Health Research
The Menzies School of Health Research is the only Australian health and medical research institute with a primary focus on the health of Indigenous communities and people living in tropical and remote areas.
The Menzies School of Health Research was a bold idea conceived in the mid-1970s.
It was a joint venture between the Menzies Foundation, the Northern Territory Government and the University of Sydney. Since the early 1980's the Menzies Foundation has provided an annual unconditional grant to the Menzies School of Health Research.
Menzies Institute for Medical Research
The Menzies Institute for Medical Research conducts innovative, world-class medical research to improve human health and wellbeing.
Since its inception in 1988, the Menzies Foundation has provided an annual unconditional grant to support the work of the Menzies Institute for Medical Research.
Menzies Centre for Health Policy
The Menzies Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) is a university research centre conducting health policy research, analysis, advice and education.
The MCHP was established in 2006 by a grant from the Menzies Foundation. The Menzies Foundation provided an annual, unconditional grant to the MCHP for 10 years to support its work. Funding ceased at the end of 2016, but the name and the relationship continue.
The MCHP is uniquely placed as it operates from nodes at two of Australia's premier universities.
Menzies Health Institute Queensland
The MHIQ is the fourth in a prestigious group of health and medical research institutions around Australia to carry the Menzies name.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding formalised in October 2014, Griffith University’s Griffith Health Institute based at its Gold Coast campus, was renamed the Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ).
The collaboration between the Menzies Foundation and Griffith University positions the university as a world-class leader in allied health research. It also builds on the Menzies Foundation’s long-term commitment to allied health.
The Menzies Foundation contributes financial support towards the role of The Menzies Foundation Professor of Allied Health Research.
