Bernadette Brady graduated from a Bachelor of Applied Science with first class honours at The University of Sydney and went on to complete a Master of Manual Therapy at the University of Western Australia in 2011 for which she was awarded a University Medal.

Bernadette is completing a PhD entitled ‘The inequities of chronic pain - responding with culturally responsive physiotherapy’ through Western Sydney University and Liverpool Hospital. The Scholarship will help Bernadette complete the final two years of her PhD.

Teresa Brown

Teresa Brown has been awarded the 2016 Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Research Scholarship in the Allied Health Sciences for her outstanding research that aims to reduce recovery times and shorten hospital visit duration for patients suffering from head and neck cancer.

Teresa’s research – which is being conducted at the University of Queensland and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital – is the first study of its kind in Australia that examines the benefit of providing early nutrition support to patients who are not already suffering from difficulty eating or drinking.

In addition to her excellent research, Teresa has delivered oral and poster presentations around the world and at the time of award has published or co published over 15 journal articles.

Zhichao Wu

Zhichao Wu holds the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science in Optometry from the Queensland University of Technology.

The two year Scholarship will enable Zhichao to complete his PhD developing novel functional and structural markers for age related macular degeneration (AMD). These markers will allow new therapies to be effectively trialed in the earliest stages of AMD prior to vision loss.

The research will be carried out at the Centre for Eye Research Australia in Melbourne.

Verity was awarded the Scholarship to complete her PhD project entitled "Generalised joint hypermobility in children and adolescents: Pain, fatigue and injuries" at the University of Sydney. Through her research, Verity hopes to uncover better methods to manage and treat the connective tissue disease known as 'hypermobility' or loose joints.

Jane Galvin holds a Master of Occupational Therapy with First Class Honours from La Trobe University.

Jane was awarded the Scholarship to complete her PhD entitled "An investigation of the clinical utility of virtual reality technology to improve the upper limb function of children with traumatic brain injury" at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. Through her PhD, Jane hopes to explore the possibility of using virtual reality as a motivating and enjoyable way to engage children in repetitive rehabilitation activities following traumatic brain injury.

Her research is designed to determine the effectiveness of fitness training for people with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and validate a field test for cardiorespiratory fitness - a type of fitness that is commonly reduced in people with TBI and restricts participation in work and leisure activities.

Her research seeks to explore why some diabetes patients do not maintain healthy eating habits and potential interventions when these bad habits emerge.
