Olsen Garland

Scholarship biography (at time of award)

Olsen Garland has been awarded the 2017 Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Engineering for his outstanding academic record, including the 2013 University Medal from the University of Newcastle, and his contribution to community.

Olsen graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with First Class Honours in 2013. He is the youngest-elected chairman of the Electrical Branch of Engineers Australia and acts as a mentor with university students. Olsen volunteers for the NSW SES and has competed in national cycling competitions.

Olsen was awarded the Scholarship to complete an MBA at the London Business School.

Liz Killen

Liz Killen has been awarded the 2016 Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Engineering for her outstanding academic record, including the receipt of the 2012 University Medal for the best performance in her Chemical Engineering undergraduate degree and thesis, along with her contribution to community.

Liz’s outreach and community engagement in activities include participation in Scientists in Schools and the Aspire Ambassador programs, aimed at inspiring students to take up STEM subjects in High School and University along with other philanthropic endeavours such as acting as a Relay for Life team leader in 2013 and 2015 raising money for the Cancer Council Australia.

Liz will complete a Master of Science Communication at the Imperial College London.

Anna Gould

Anna Gould graduated from the University of New South Wales with First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering in 2013. In addition to her academic achievements, Anna was a member of the 2013 winning team at the Novartis International Biotechnology Camp held in Basel, Switzerland.

In 2014, Anna undertook a Master of Process Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

Anna was awarded the Scholarship to complete an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise at The University of Cambridge.

Quan Lau

University of Cambridge

Quan Lau graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 2012. In addition to earning First Class Honours, Quan was named valedictorian of her graduating class.

Quan is passionate about social and environmental justice, and was the Regional President of Engineers Without Borders in Victoria. She has worked as an intern at the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and has volunteered overseas in Cambodia and India. In 2014, she was named by Engineers Australia as a “Young Leader to Watch.”

Quan was awarded the Scholarship to complete an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge.

David Bowly

David Bowly graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 2010. In addition to earning first class honours, David graduated in the top 10 of his class of 290 and was awarded several medals including the prestigious Sir John Monash Medal for outstanding achievement.

David has a particular interest in two aspects of engineering: renewable power generation, and education within the profession – enabling young engineers to learn from more experienced engineers.

David was awarded the Scholarship to complete an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge.

Mahala McLindin

Mahala McLindin graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering. In addition to earning First Class Honours, Mahala was awarded the Bradfield Memorial Prize which recognises the most distinguish student graduating with first class honours in Civil Engineering.

Mahala was awarded the Scholarship to complete MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management at the University of Oxford.

Brittany Coff

Brittany Coff graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Civil and Structural Engineering in 2008. In addition to earning First Class Honours, Brittany was awarded a University Medal in recognition of her academic excellence.

David was awarded the Scholarship to complete an MSc in Transport at the Imperial College London.

Alisa Selimovic

Alisa Selimovic graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering. In addition to earning First Class Honours, Alisa was awarded a University Medal from Flinders University and a second University Medal from Engineers Australia.

Alisa was awarded the Scholarship to complete a DPhil in Engineering at The University of Oxford which will focus on creating patient-specific models of cerebral aneurysm evolution. The research is aimed at gaining a better insight into the mechanisms of the disease, and, ultimately, to assist with clinical decision-making.

Rohan Shekhar

Rohan Shekhar graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering. In addition to earning First Class Honours, Rohan was awarded a University Medal. Rohan's final year thesis was entitled "Modelling and Automated Digging Control of a Cable Shovel". He was subsequently employed as a research engineer working on scale modelling and automation of excavation machinery.

Rohan was awarded the Scholarship to complete a PhD in Engineering focusing on 'Variable Horizon Model Predictive Control', a technology particularly suited to the automation of vehicles at the University of Cambridge.

Adrian McCallum

Adrian McCallum graduated from the University of Western Australia with First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Civil Engineering. Adrian also holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of New South Wales and a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Adrian was awarded the Scholarship to complete a PhD in Polar Studies at the University of Cambridge.

Mark Jenkinson

Mark Jenkinson graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering (1993) and a Bachelor of Science (1994). In addition to earning First Class Honours in both these degrees, Mark has won several awards, including the Sir Robert Chapman Prize.

Mark was awarded the Scholarship to complete a DPhil at the Robotics Research Group, University of Oxford.
