Nathan Van Wees

Nathan Van Wees has been awarded the 2017 Sir Robert Menzies Scholarship in Law for his outstanding academic record, including being awarded the Supreme Court Exhibition Prize for Best Honours Thesis (law), the University Medal from Monash University and for his contribution to community.

Nathan graduated at the top of his class of 400 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in 2015. He has worked as a volunteer tutoring refugees in English and provided research assistance at Refugee Legal. In addition Nathan completed three internships – the first with Ghana’s Human Rights Advocacy Centre, and later with within the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Canberra and for the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Nathan was awarded the Menzies Scholarship to complete a BCL at Oxford University.

Emily Rumble

Emily Rumble has been awarded the Scholarship for her progress into a career of financial services regulation, contribution to community and outstanding academic achievement.

Throughout her degree, Emily received six Dean’s List honours, a university medal in History and graduated second in a class of 203 students at the University of NSW. In addition, Emily contributed to university life both in the written form (via contributions to student newspapers and law journals), and vocally through participation and facilitation of debating competitions, college law reviews and choir performances.

Christopher Ash graduated from the University of Queensland in 2011 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science and Criminology with First Class Honours. In addition to being ranked 1 of 248 students in his graduating class, Christopher was awarded the Dean's Commendations for High Achievement from 2006 - 2011 along with several other awards. After completing his undergraduate degree, Christopher went on to work as a lawyer with Minter Ellison in Brisbane.

Christopher was awarded the Scholarship to complete a BCL at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. The law around privacy and freedom of speech, and the changes in criminal law in Queensland are two debates to which he would like to contribute on his return to Australia.

Sarah Beshar

Sarah Beshar graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Laws with first class honours in 1982. Sarah earned several awards throughout her degree and was the first female president of the University’s Law Student Society.

Sarah is the first recipient of the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law and was awarded the Scholarship to complete a Bachelor of Civil Law at Magdalen College, University of Oxford.
