Dedicated to cultivating a new generation of leaders committed to driving positive change, empowering communities, and creating a lasting impact on Australian society and beyond, the Menzies Leadership Foundation is delighted to announce Andreas Zakhari as the 2024 Menzies Global Voices Fellow. Andreas recently represented the Foundation at the prestigious International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Annual Meetings, held in Washington, D.C., from October 21 to October 26, 2024.
The Annual Meetings convened central bankers, finance and development ministers, parliamentarians, private sector executives, civil society representatives, and academics to discuss pressing global economic issues, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, and economic development. Key events included the Plenary session, the Development Committee meeting, and the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) meeting. The IMFC, comprising finance ministers and central bank governors, advised on the international monetary and financial system and provided guidance for the IMF’s work program during its 50th meeting on October 24-25, 2024.
Reflecting on the experience, Andreas shared,“The unique offer of the Fellowship is the access to these international delegations and a funded seat at the table. I’m grateful for the chance to represent and contribute to the conversations that influence global policy and development.”
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, in her curtain-raiser speech on October 17, highlighted the global economy’s resilience amid challenges such as inflation and geopolitical tensions, emphasising the importance of policy cooperation and reform. Throughout the week, participants engaged in seminars, regional briefings, and press conferences focused on fostering economic cooperation and addressing global challenges.
As an economist and consultant specializing in infrastructure planning and urban development, Andreas brings valuable insights into economic transformation, inequality reduction, and sustainable development, particularly in rapidly evolving regions like South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA). His forward-thinking approach and commitment to global economic resilience make him a vital contributor to the leadership conversations at the IMF and World Bank.
The Menzies Leadership Foundation congratulate Andreas Zakhari on his impactful participation and look forward to supporting him as he continues to champion inclusive and sustainable economic development.
